Any tips for using AirTran airlines?
I booked a flight from Richmond,VA to San Antonio,TX with 1 hour layovers in Atlanta. I leave early morning Jan 3 and come back in the evening of Jan 9. I'm just curious...what are some precautions I should take with this airline? I've never flown with them before, but I'm kind of nervous now, I've seen terrible reviews for them all over the internet. This is my first time flying by myself, so any tips for a smooth trip with AirTran are appreciated.

Well, I will admit that you could have picked a better airline to fly other than Air Tran, but they are't that bad. Just don't check any luggage if you can avoid it. They aren't the best airline out there when it comes to Mishandled Baggage Ratio. That means they lose a lot compared to the other airlines out there. You will either be flying on a Boeing 717, or a Boeing 737-800. Both are relatively new airplanes. You may have heard of ValuJet, the one that crashed into the Everglades in the mid-90's. Well Air Tran holdings bought ValueJet, and for a while were flying all of those old DC-9's. Those are all phased out now. The staff at Air Tran leaves much to be desired, and going through Atlanta isn't a pleasant part of the trip, but then again, when it Atlanta fun to go through? They do have XM satellite radio on their planes for your to enjoy while flying. As for safety, they are good. Hardly any major US carriers have safety issues these days. Just relax, you'll be fine. Trust me, the airline industry is so messed up right now, you'll have a crappy experience on almost evey carrier as we are all hurting! But I do hope you have a pleasant trip.

I've never flown AirTran but flying from Richmond is easy enough. It is a small airport and I routinely arrive 45mins before departure and have no problems. When you walk down to security AirTran use Concourse A which is on the left.

AirTran is no worse than other airlines and better than a few. Inflight service is nonexistent on most domestic airlines. The economy class seats are about the same size on all airlines. The "best" airline is the one that has the best combination of schedules and fares because most airlines are pretty much the same. If you're flying on a 717, my best advice is to be short. The legroom is very tight. The 737's are better.

Don't try to bring a loaded side arm on the aircraft........
